Tool Kit for Home Repair

Every home must have a repair kit, regardless of whether the occupants are handy or not. Various things can go wrong in a household and may perhaps need immediate attention. You will always need to approach a professional for complicated home repair jobs. First of all, you need to understand the differences between a basic repair kit and a home repair kit. There are several basic tool kits that you need to add in order to prepare a good home repair kit.

To begin with, your home repair kit must contain some basic tools such as a flat, a hammer, a wrench, a screwdriver and pliers. A few of the other things that you must consider are screws, washers, nuts, nails and bolts. From a shaking table leg to a leaking toilet tank, you never know what might fall apart in your house and hence you must always be ready to fix it.

You can also have a breaker box layout, which identifies which breaker controls to include in your home kit. Sometimes, you may have to switch off a few breakers in case if an electrical problem or water leak. Batteries, paper towels and light bulbs must also be a part of your home repair kit. These tools will be extremely useful for making small repairs in your home. While setting up your home repair kit, you can also include a wire cutter, electrical tape, band aids and a utility knife flashlight.

As you get started with small repairs in your house, you will realise that you may need a few more things as well. It would be suggestive to keep your home repair kit along with your first aid or emergency kits. Such a way, you will be able to find it easily in case of a breakdown. Once you use the tools, you must always replace them. It would be pointless to have a kit that contains no tools in it.

Repairing Your Cover to Your Swamp Cooler

What a swamp cover cooler does is to protect the interior of the swamp cooler vent.  When yours is in need of repair, you need nothing more than to follow the directions below to repair it no matter what it is made from.

Items Needed:

  • Utility knife
  • sandpaper- 40 grit
  • epoxy or silicone
  • thread that is heavy duty
  • sewing needles 16 ga.
  • duct tape

First: Determine the Damage

A cover that is plastic may get broken from impact.  If there is a minimal amount of damage to it, then the silicone or epoxy should be able to fix it.  For one that is made of canvass, you may find tears that have happened from some sharp object.  This can be fixed with duct tape.

However, there are times that there are larger areas of damage and you may need more than just a quick fix for a repair.

Second: Patching

Use the utility knife to take off any areas of the plastic that are frayed.  Now use the 40 grit to sand down all edges.  For a more extensive repair, you will want to use the epoxy.  This is because it will be hard when it is dry.  Mix together the epoxy and put it on the area of damage.  Be sure that you completely repair the area that has been damaged.  Let the epoxy have time to dry.  Take a look at it to make sure that everything was completely repaired.  You can buy an epoxy gun that will do the mixing for you.  If you have never used epoxy before, then the gun is an investment you will want to make.

If you are using silicone, then you will take the same steps in preparing the plastic.  Once that is done, you will put the silicone on thick in all the areas of damage and then use your finger to make it all smooth.  This will also remove any excess silicone from the area.  After you finish with either the epoxy or the silicone, you will want to cover it over with the duct tape to protect the area.

Third: Torn Canvas

If you have a damaged canvass swamp cooler cover, then there are two steps to the repair.  The first is to sew the damaged area back up.  The second is to put duct tape over it.  In order to get this done, you will need to remove the clips that are holding the canvass in place.  This will allow you to then take it to a surface that is easier to work on.  Thread the needle and then manually sew the canvass back together.  Ensure that the torn area is secure then cover over the area that you stitched with the duct tape.

Fourth: Replace

If the damage that was sustained to the cover is too much to repair, then you will need to replace it with a new one.  This will make it so that you are not loosing heat from your home over the winter months.  Be sure that you get one that is the same in size as the other one was.  This will help to ensure a perfect fit.  Put in in the place of the other one according to the directions that come with it.
